July 9th and 10th began the first weekend of Region 6’s 2011 race season in Harbor Beach, Michigan. The former Can-Am and APBA National Tour race site was turned into a regional race this year but several racers still turned out for the annual event. Jettribe sponsored rider and Region 6 resident, Chelsea Schneider was among the racers who attended the event and had a very successful weekend of racing despite having some bad luck early on in the weekend.
It’s always a privilege to be able to race in the wonderful town of Harbor Beach. The locals are always friendly and love interacting with the racers. Likewise, the racers can’t get enough of the great food, live bands, endless activities, and fantastic fireworks displays that take place during the Maritime Festival every year. Al K who is in charge of the Festival always puts so much effort into making the weekend a huge success. It’s almost impossible to not have a good time.
As is the custom for many racers who go to Harbor Beach, Chelsea arrived at the race site on Thursday afternoon to get in some riding time for a few days before the racing action got started. On Friday afternoon while out practicing with another racer Chelsea was hit. While she walked away from the minor accident without a mark on her, her racing ski was left with a hole in the side of it. On top of having fiberglass damage, Chelsea had been having electrical problems with the ski since the race in Racine, WI so it was a very frustrating weekend for her.
espite not being able to race her own ski, Chelsea jumped on a fellow racer’s ski and turned up the heat on the race course. On Saturday Chelsea raced in Novice Women’s Ski Limited and Amateur Ski Open. Although she was the only one in both of those classes she was combined with other ski classes and took some boys to school on the water, proving that she can hold her own against the guys.
On Sunday Chelsea once again raced in Novice Women’s Ski Limited and switched to Novice Ski Limited, winning both classes again. After having some bad starts on Sunday Chelsea worked her way up through the pack of racers, finishing in 2nd place against the other racers in almost every moto. This was pretty impressive considering she had to race on borrowed equipment.
Chelsea is looking forward to competing in Belle River this coming weekend for the 4th round of the IJSBA National Tour.
